Raiders-Milton Game 3 Highlights

Raiders vs. Milton - GAME 1

Striking it Big

Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette hosts the annual Bowl for Kids Sake tournament scheduled this year on Sunday, March 2 at Georgetown Bowl in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton.

This year, trading skates for shoes, players from the Georgetown Jr. A Raiders will join the Mayor and many local businesses and raise funds for local mentoring programming.  Organizers say this year is shaping up to be the biggest ever with 19 teams already registered and only one team spot remaining.

The Raiders have set their own goal of raising $5,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Many people know that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton matches volunteers with local children in one-to-one mentoring relationships, a bond that makes a lifelong impact on the life of a child.

However, BBBSH offers other mentoring programs in the community.  For instance, 50 elementary school children benefited from attending the Homework Club after-school mentoring program for kids. The Homework Club is currently operating in three area schools in Halton Hills – one in Georgetown and two in Acton.

Proceeds from the Mayor Bonnette Bowl for Kids Sake event will stay within the Halton Hills boundaries and go directly to the mentoring programs for the children within the local community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton is partially funded by the United Way of Halton Hills, but receives no other ongoing funding so it is campaigns like Bowl for Kids’ Sake that ensures the agency can continue to reach out to those children most in need of a mentor.

Currently in Halton, there are approximately 150 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sisters match.

Last year Georgetown’s head coach Greg Walters was an assistant coach for the 2011 Canada East silver medalists.   This year, after being named head coach for the 2012 Team Canada East, Greg and his assistants look to improve on that silver medal win and have assembled a group of talented young hockey players from the CCHL and OJHL.   Included in that group, also representing Team Canada East, will be Georgetown’s Goalie Daniel Mannella, Defenseman Thomas Welch, and Forward Stephan Hladin. The Junior A Georgetown Raiders organization wishes to congratulate all the players and coaches named to this year’s 2012 Canada East team and wish them the best of luck in their quest to achieve the Gold Medal at this year’s 2012 World Jr. A Challenge.

Over the past years, the Georgetown Hockey organization has been able to develop talented young hockey players who have moved onto the next level of play.  I am sure there are many Raider fans that have wondered what has happened to their once favourite players to wear the Raider crest.  Here we will take a brief look at a few Raiders from the past and see where they are now.

Jay Sprague, has moved on to play for the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL.

Wade Finegan, a past captain of the Raiders is graduating this year from Bowling Green State University (CCHL).  There he was awarded as being the most improved athlete throughout all of Bowling Green’s athletics.

Mike Gurtler, who went on scholarship to Mercyhurt College (AHA) is graduating this year.  Next season he will be suiting up with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

Kevin Harvey, who was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL entry draft, has moved on to play in the AHL for the Springfield Falcons and is currently playing in the CHL for the Rapid City Rush.

Rob Sgarbossa, who had received a scholarship to Morrisville State College (SUNTAC) is also graduating this year.

Tyson Gimblett, is graduating this year from the University of Prince Edward Island.

Matt Carter, is also graduating this year from the University of Prince Edward Island.  Matt was also awarded 2nd Team All Canadian, and 1st Team All Atlantic Conference.   Matt Carter was also at Dallas Star's Rookie Camp this September 2011.

Jay Sprague, Wade Finegan, Kevin Harvey, Rob Sgarbossa, Mike Gurtler and Tyson Gimblett were all key members of the 2004-2005 Raider’s hockey team who came first in the division, won the Dudley Hewitt Cup and then moved onto the Royal Back Cup.  At this time having a line consisting of Finegan, Sgarbossa and Gurtler really proved to be a huge asset in helping the team reach the RBC.

We would like to wish all the Raiders of the past the best of luck in all their future endeavors, and hope to see them come support the new players to wear the Raider crest.

BILLETS Required, the Georgetown Raiders are looking for families who would be interested in billeting our hockey players. Interested parties should contact Coach Greg Walters at 416-931-7024
