Greg Walters, OJHL Coach of the Year

Date: Mar 13, 2012

WALTERS NAMED COACH-OF-THE-YEAR

The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Greg Walters (photo credit - Izak Westgate/HHOF)of the Georgetown Raiders has been named the 2011-12 winner of the Coach-of-the-Year Award.

During his second season as the Raiders’ General Manager and Head Coach, Greg Walters led the club to the West Division, North-West Conference and overall OJHL regular season titles with a record of 39-9-1 for 79 points, edging out the defending regular season champion Newmarket Hurricanes by a single overtime victory for first place overall.

The regular season title marked the first for the Raiders since the 2008-09 season after finishing with a .806 winning percentage. The club accomplished the feat with an impressive statistical season that included a 20-4-1 record on the road and a league-high 15 game winning streak on the road that began on November 17, continuing through to the end of the regular season. The Raiders played a tough, but entertaining brand of hockey, finishing second in the OJHL with 1,189 penalty minutes, while also topping the league with 2,009 shots taken.

Not only did the club finish second in the OJHL with 224 goals scored, but the Walters-led club was defensively sound, allowing a league-low 109 goals against. “Wally,” as he affectionately referred to by those in the hockey world, also coached the Raiders to the best all-around special teams record in the OJHL. The club would finish first on the power play, going 67/240 for a 27.92% rating, while also finishing second best on the penalty kill at 87.50%, allowing only 38 goals on 304 opportunities.

One of the most well-respected and hardest-working coaches in the OJHL, Walters was previously a guest coach with Ontario’s Under-16 Program of Excellence during the 2006-07 season and this year was selected as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada East, helping them capture a silver medal at the 2011 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge that was held in Langley, B.C. During the Christmas break, he was also selected to guide the West Division All-Stars during the inaugural Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge that was held in Smiths Fall, Ontario.

The 41-year old native of Toronto, Ontario had a 12 year minor professional career as a defenceman after being drafted in the 4th round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, 80th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs. After spending time in the AHL, ECHL, IHL and UHL, Walters began his coaching career as a player-coach during his final season of pro hockey in 2001-02 with the UHL’s Port Huron Border Cats. The following year, he would join the OHL’s Sarnia Sting as Assistant Coach and then would spend the next eight years learning his craft with the Sting. Looking for a new challenge, Walters returned home, taking over the reins of the Georgetown Raiders last season, 2010-11.

The OJHL Coach-of-the-Year Award is awarded to the Head Coach that is adjudged to have contributed the
most to his club’s success throughout the course of the regular season.

Congratulations Greg from your Georgetown Raider Family!

Andrew Groombridge "OJHL TRAINER OF THE YEAR!"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2011-12 OJHL TRAINER-OF-THE-YEAR

“Andrew Groombridge Named First-Ever OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year”

February 28, 2012, Georgetown, Ontario – The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that
Andrew Groombridge of the Georgetown Raiders has been named the inaugural recipient of the OJHL Trainerof-
the-Year Award.

Groombridge has been the Head Athletic Trainer with the Raiders for the past 12 seasons, beginning his
tenure in Georgetown during the 2000-01 season. The 51-year old native of Sarnia, Ontario joined the Junior
‘A’ club with a wealth of experience already in his back-pocket, having started his training career back in 1974
with his high school football team. His experience over 38 years includes time spent in football, lacrosse, fast-
pitch softball, and of course hockey, as well as participating in more than 30 national championships at the
minor, amateur, college and professional level.

“Drew,” as he his known by many, is as dedicated and well-respected a trainer as there is in the OJHL with
contributions for not only the hometown Raiders, but often the visiting team squads as well. During his 12
seasons with the Raiders, the club has captured three OJHL regular season titles, would host and win the
2005 Dudley-Hewitt Cup and participate in the Royal Bank Cup that was held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan that
season. He would use that experience at the Royal Bank Cup to assist the Streetsville Derbys as hosts of the
National Junior ‘A’ Championship the following season. Also during this time, the Level Three Hockey Canada
certified trainer would assist with three OHA Under-17 camps, three OHA High-Performance camps, the 2009
World Junior ‘A’ Challenge Evaluation Camp, the 2010 Under-20 Three Nations Cup held in Norrtalje, Sweden
and the 2011 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge.

A fifteen time All-Star in the various sports he has covered, some of Groombridge’s other sports
accomplishments include national championships with the 1983 and 1984 Point Edward Pacers Junior ‘B’
Lacrosse Club, as well as with the 2005 and 2006 St. Thomas Centennials Senior Men’s Fast-pitch Softball
Club. He was also the Head Athletic Trainer for two seasons with the Detroit Turbos professional lacrosse
club, just prior to joining the Raiders, and went home to assist the Petrolia Squires Senior Club when they
hosted the 2001 Allan Cup in Sarnia, Ontario. In 2010, his 36 years of service were recognized as he was
Inducted into the Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame with the Special Achievement Award, for the person
who over a number of years has made significant contributions to sports beyond athletic endeavours.

Truly a “Jack-of-all-Trades,” Groombridge is also the trainer for the Halton Hills Bulldogs Junior ‘B’ Lacrosse
squad and the St. Thomas Centennials Fastball team, along with finding time to hold down full-time
employment. Despite the busy schedule, he can still be found wandering the corridors of the Alcott Arena
seven days a week, making sure the Raiders are well taken care of for their next challenge.

The OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year Award is awarded to the trainer, therapist or equipment manager that is
adjudged to be the best at his profession for his/her member club throughout the course of the regular season,
while past experience and time served will be taken into consideration.

Dave Campbell of the Whitby Fury and Drew Laskoski of the Newmarket Hurricanes were co-runners-up in the
OJHL award balloting to Groombridge.

CONGRATULATIONS DREW!

Where Are They Now?

Over the past years, the Georgetown Hockey organization has been able to develop talented young hockey players who have moved onto the next level of play.  I am sure there are many Raider fans that have wondered what has happened to their once favourite players to wear the Raider crest.  Here we will take a brief look at a few Raiders from the past and see where they are now.

Jay Sprague, has moved on to play for the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL.

Wade Finegan, a past captain of the Raiders is graduating this year from Bowling Green State University (CCHL).  There he was awarded as being the most improved athlete throughout all of Bowling Green’s athletics.

Mike Gurtler, who went on scholarship to Mercyhurt College (AHA) is graduating this year.  Next season he will be suiting up with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

Kevin Harvey, who was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL entry draft, has moved on to play in the AHL for the Springfield Falcons and is currently playing in the CHL for the Rapid City Rush.

Rob Sgarbossa, who had received a scholarship to Morrisville State College (SUNTAC) is also graduating this year.

Tyson Gimblett, is graduating this year from the University of Prince Edward Island.

Matt Carter, is also graduating this year from the University of Prince Edward Island.  Matt was also awarded 2nd Team All Canadian, and 1st Team All Atlantic Conference.   Matt Carter was also at Dallas Star's Rookie Camp this September 2011.

Jay Sprague, Wade Finegan, Kevin Harvey, Rob Sgarbossa, Mike Gurtler and Tyson Gimblett were all key members of the 2004-2005 Raider’s hockey team who came first in the division, won the Dudley Hewitt Cup and then moved onto the Royal Back Cup.  At this time having a line consisting of Finegan, Sgarbossa and Gurtler really proved to be a huge asset in helping the team reach the RBC.

We would like to wish all the Raiders of the past the best of luck in all their future endeavors, and hope to see them come support the new players to wear the Raider crest.
